Role models have always been central to my aspirations and goals. As we enter International Women’s Month, it’s only right we pay homage to those who have paved the way for us.
Below you will find my top 5 women who I believe are changing the game for women of color around the world:
Number 5: Oprah
Born in segregated Kosciusko, Mississippi, Oprah took one talent of public speaking and a heart full of love to propel her into destiny! This woman owns a network, magazine, is partnering with heavy hitters like Weight Watchers, and even has her own pizza. Let’s all show respect where respect is due.
Number 4: J Lo
J Lo has always made me think twice about my body goals, but that’s not why I admire her. Over the years we have watched this woman lose and find love over and over again, all while managing to maintain a spectacular career and be consistently excellent. J Lo gets my award for resilience and authenticity.
Number 3: Sarah Jakes-Roberts
Chiiiiiille. As a subscriber to the Woman Evolve network, I simply admire the freedom in Sarah Jakes-Roberts expression of “fall down seven times, stand up eight” faith. The woman has a fantastic testimony and has truly helped me find my own voice in the way I express my full self at work, church, home, and online.
Number 2: Sonia Sotomayor
The first Latina elected to the Supreme Court, the highest court in our nation?? Come on, girl! BOW. DOWN. (Not really, we only bow before Christ here). But seriously, the grace and humility Justice Sotomayor shows even at the highest levels are simply inspiring. Particularly considering her humble beginnings. I aspire to be just as successful and equally humble.
Number 1: Michelle Obama
Now you know there was no way I was not mentioning my forever first lady, I was an absolute STAN when I saw her live in Philadelphia. So much wisdom, so much grace. It was the first time I saw a packed arena for a conversation. Not a play. Not a concert. To hear HER speak. She is GOALS.
As I mentioned in my LinkedIn an article about leadership, it’s always great to have role models, just make sure they don’t replace your true identity by trying to copy-paste another person’s style.
