Hope in the Darkness: A Mother's Testimony

In the book of Romans, we find a poignant expression of faith, "He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become 'the father of many nations,' according to what was said, 'Thus shall your descendants be.'" (Romans 4:18). This passage exemplifies a steadfast belief in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances—a theme that resonates deeply with my personal story.

I vividly recall a day marked by both despair and determination: the day the doctors presented the ultrasound images of my son, Emmanuel. The prognosis was bleak; Emmanuel had developed Osteopenia, and three of his major organs had failed. The medical team declared him not viable, suggesting that his survival, tethered to machines, was merely a technicality maintained by parental hope.

Yet, in the solitude of that hospital room, as I gazed at Emmanuel's isolette, a biblical query resonated within me, "can these bones live again?" This reference from Ezekiel 37, where prophetic words are spoken to revitalize dry bones, prompted a pivotal transformation in my approach to Emmanuel's fight for life. Despite my limited biblical knowledge at the time, the message was clear and compelling.

Embracing this divine inspiration, I began to verbalize scriptures over Emmanuel daily. This practice not only fortified my spirit but also birthed "The Adventures of Mighty Manny," a mini-podcast recounting our journey and the miracles we witnessed. Throughout our grueling NICU experience, where negativity from numerous calls from doctors prophesying doom could have dampened our spirits, my husband and I clung to faith and to each other until the day we brought Emmanuel home.
